National Strawberry Day is Feb. 27, and we are *berry* excited to celebrate! Whether you like your strawberries complimented with other flavors (like in our Signature Hawaiian Delight!) or you prefer a classic strawberry shake, we’ve got the perfect custard treat to help you celebrate.
History of Strawberries:
Strawberries have been around for centuries, historically noted for their medicinal abilities. These berries are native to North America, but they weren’t actively farmed until the Renaissance period in Europe. Strawberries crossed the Atlantic with some of the first European settlers, who brought them back to their homeland to be cultivated. Farmers found that covering the roots of the plant in hay, or straw, helped keep them safe from unwanted pests, which is likely where the name “strawberry” originated.
The average strawberry has 200 seeds.
Ancient Romans used strawberries to treat everything from depression to sore throats.
Today, 94% of American households consume strawberries.
Strawberries are grown in every U.S. state, but the majority of our annual national crop comes from California.
