Who created the first onion ring recipe?
While no one really knows who should receive the credit for making the first of these delectable, golden rings, recorded recipes for homemade battered and fried onions can be traced back to the 1800s. Others attribute this simple delight’s beginning to a restaurant that made them famous in the 1930s. Regardless, we’re just glad they’re here. A world without onion rings would be a sad place to live.
How to make onion rings at home
If you aren’t near a Freddy’s and want to try your hand at making onion rings yourself, making onion rings is pretty easy and can be modified to suit a variety of nutritional needs.
- Gather your ingredients & cooking utensils of your choice. We suggest:
- Onions–Any color will work. Traditionally, white onions are used, but red (or purple) onions work well, too, and add gorgeous color!
- Flour to coat each ring prior to dipping in the batter.
- Batter—pre-made mix or your favorite recipe should do the trick. We recommend adding some Freddy’s Famous Steakburger & Fry Seasoning® to your mixture for full flavor! Don’t forget to grab some Freddy’s Famous Fry Sauce® for the ultimate dipping experience.
- Cooking oil—many people like to use peanut oil, shortening, etc., but plain ole vegetable oil will crisp up your golden rings of goodness with the best of ‘em.
- Cutting board
- Deep fryer, air-fryer or pot or pan for frying
- Slice your onion into ½ inch rings
- Coat each ring with flour, then dip in the batter. Place the rings on a wire rack until the dripping stops. You can add a second coat or add some Panko breadcrumbs for some extra crunch before frying.
- While the rings are dripping, preheat your fryer or pot of cooking oil. Once the oil and rings are ready, fry the rings. Try to do only a few at a time until golden and crispy. (Usually only 2-3 minutes.)
- Lay the rings on paper towels to drain.
- Season (with Freddy’s Seasoning, obviously!) as you desire and enjoy!
