Tips for Planning Hot Dog Meals for Fall Festivities

As the leaves start to turn and the days are growing just a little cooler, you may be excited to host a fall cookout or other gathering in celebration of the season. Putting a hot dog meal on your menu is an idea that guests of all ages will enjoy and that can also make the hosting a little easier for you! Here are some tips for planning a hot dog meal for your next event:

Plates of hot dogs with mustard and relish surrounded by salads, chips, and condiments

Provide an assortment of buns and toppings. Level up your hot dog meals by providing a variety of buns and toppings. In addition to familiar condiments like ketchup and mustard, consider including toppings like chili, specialty cheeses, kimchi or grilled veggies. Instead of a single choice of bun, create a selection of buns, perhaps adding pretzel and poppy seed buns to your usual options. Corn dogs may also be an exciting and playful variation to swap for your standard hot dogs. Do you have a lot of younger guests coming to your event? Consider mini hot dogs for your meals, like these corn dogs from Just a Taste!

Explore a variety of sides or align them with a party theme. Crispy potato chips or fries, smoky baked beans, or refreshing salads are just some of the sides that often complete hot dog meals. With so many delicious options to choose from, picking other dishes to include with your hot dog meals might be more challenging than deciding to make hot dogs in the first place. Therefore, a potluck approach to the hot dog meal may be helpful here. If you take charge of the hot dogs, then each guest might bring another component such as a side or dessert. If you are doing all of the food preparation, then consider aligning your sides, desserts or even drinks with a party theme. Your sides might be inspired by seasonal ingredients in your area, such as a slaw that combines apples, carrots, red cabbage or a kale salad. If you are also watching a game during your event, you may choose to serve other finger foods, like veggies and dip, watermelon slices or tots.

Consider make-ahead preparations. While the weather often continues to be beautiful during this time of year, it can sometimes change swiftly, even from one hour to the next. Additionally, fall can mean busier schedules, especially as kids return to school and other activities resume. Consequently, you may want to make hot dog meals ahead of time or have a backup plan for your hot dog meals in case less cookout-friendly weather is expected. From pigs in a blanket to hot dog casseroles, explore a variety of hot dog meal ideas that best fit your gathering.

Hot Dog Meal Ideas for Fall Gatherings

Hot dogs are a versatile meal idea, which works equally well for both weeknight dinners and larger gatherings. Whether you are celebrating the first official day of fall or just getting together during the season, you have many options for preparing and serving hot dogs. Here are four ideas to consider:

1. Grill your hot dogs.

If grilling in the chilly rain or frosty snow isn’t for you, then you may want to take advantage of the fall weather for your final grilling efforts of the year. Consider preparing both hot dogs and buns on the grill and maybe even your sides. Compared to a dish like BBQ brisket, hot dogs also require a fairly minimal amount of cooking time. Also, with the addition of the last corn of the season, chips or a few sides of your choice, you can throw together a meal fairly quickly, which is beneficial for any impromptu fall gatherings that may occur.

Alternatively, have simple and delicious hot dog meals catered from Freddy’s with just a little bit of notice. For example, you might surprise your team with a cookout-themed luncheon or take a picnic-style approach to an afternoon gathering of loved ones in the park. The options for individual bagged lunches on Freddy’s catering menu include all-beef hot dog meals, as well as other popular menu selections like various steakburgers and chicken sandwiches. Each lunch includes a hot dog on a toasted bun, Freddy’s Kettle Chips and a brownie. Instead of worrying about sides and desserts to pair with your hot dogs, our catering services can provide you with complete packaged meals for your guests to enjoy at the location of your choice!

2. Offer soups or stews with warm bread.

From soups with Italian sausage, various beans and leafy greens to ones featuring kielbasa and green split peas, sausages in general often appear in recipes for warming soups and stews. Although your usual hot dog cookout preparations might include a bun, hot dog meals can also be prepared in these other formats. Instead of serving potatoes, veggies and hot dogs separately, you might serve up a big pot of soup like this one from Taste of Home for your fall party. Alternatively, invite guests to dive into a warm bowl of franks and beans, as in this recipe from The Seasoned Mom – a dish that can serve as a complete hot dog meal or a side.

3. Serve up a casserole.

As with soups and stews, comforting casserole dishes are hot dog meals for fall that often combine familiar sides and toppings with the hot dogs. Especially if you are grilling multiple items for your fall cookout, taking a different approach to including hot dogs on your menu may be a helpful way to ensure that you include this preferred staple without taking up space on the grill. One popular hot dog preparation, the chili cheese dog, also works well in casserole form, as illustrated in the recipe at Allrecipes. For casseroles that incorporate familiar hot dog meal sides like pasta salads or potatoes, you may be interested in a dish like the one from Spicy Southern Kitchen which includes tater tots or from Food.com that combines hot dogs with macaroni and cheese.

4. Order hot dog combo meals for carry-out, dine-in or delivery.

Sometimes, fall cookout plans don’t come together exactly as you may have hoped or happen suddenly. Fortunately, your local Freddy’s has you covered with customizable hot dog meals! On the Freddy’s menu, you and your fellow diners can choose an All-Beef Hot Dog Combo, a Chili Cheese Dog Combo, or a Kid’s Hot Dog Combo in addition to a variety of other savory selections and sweet frozen custard treats. These combo meals include multiple options for sides, as well as drinks or frozen custard treats. To the hot dogs themselves, add anything from bacon and sauerkraut to grilled jalapeños and honey mustard. With regard to a side, choose from familiar choices like kettle chips and fries or opt for onion rings or cheese curds. For the third component of a hot dog or other combo meals, pick a favorite fountain drink or a frozen custard treat like a shake or the seasonal Pumpkin Pie Concrete!

Taste of Home shares one approach to this recipe, as well as options for other types of fillings to use in a similar preparation. Consider pairing the mummies with a seasonal vegetable display, like this pumpkin idea from Keeping the Peas, to complete your hot dog meal. Make a hot dog bar the centerpiece of your festivities!
